How to make Brown Sugar
Making brown sugar is super easy to do at home

I woke up to unexpected surprise-a very cool morning. We are thrilled about that! We had to run back in the house and grab jackets before we left for school.
Fall is here!
What about you? What’s the weather like in your area? Do you need to bundle up already? Or is it warm in your area and you can still wear shorts?
I know the calendar says we’ve been in the autumn season. But where we live, the temps can reach in the 80’s this time of year so it’s hasn’t felt like fall until this week.
Cooler weather means the holidays are upon us. I am beginning to game plan so I am ready next month. I like to think I have a game plan so it doesn’t overwhelm me.
In theory I want to keep it simple and be on a budget. I know, people don’t like to hear the “Budget” word. But it works for me.
I want to be able to enjoy my holiday baking & cooking and gift shop with a happy heart. If I’m stressed, my bad attitude isn’t fair to my family.
Have you noticed ALL the Christmas stuff that has popped up already?
I have seen Christmas in almost every store I’ve shopped at (grocery store included). I’m not ready to listen to Christmas music-not until Thanksgiving.
I like my holidays One at a Time-Thank You!
We just picked apples & pumpkins-I want to savor that.
We are in between Rosh Hashanah & Yom Kippur and several holidays to come.
Retail Influencers please let us trick or treat and candy binge before you enamor us with a little bit of Thanksgiving and all the holiday shopping that will need to be done.
I guess I needed to get that weight off my shoulders.
Before I let my rant take me down a bunny trail, I really wanted to share a post about…
What is in brown sugar? Can I make it home? How easy it is to make?
I wasn’t even sure of the difference between light brown sugar and dark brown sugar.
I thought those questions when I ran out of brown sugar in the middle of making several batches of cookies.
Have you ever been out of brown sugar when you wanted to make cookies?
Just in case you’re thinking about making chocolate chip cookies without brown sugar–DON’T DO IT!
Baking is a form of science that is not easily tweaked like we can do in cooking.
So when a recipe calls for brown sugar and you don’t have it, do not proceed with the recipe my friend.
It won’t turn out the same.
I’ve baked a lot of cookies in my day. If you run out of brown sugar but decide to make brown sugarless chocolate chip cookies anyway, they won’t taste bad.
They just won’t have that chewy attribute, which is something brown sugar gives to chocolate chip cookie recipes.
Once I discovered what goes in to making brown sugar I never wanted to buy brown sugar again.
It is SUPER quick & easy to make.
I started buying sugar in bulk from a large warehouse store; so it was a no brainer for me to start making my own brown sugar.
But just in case you are wondering, you don’t need to buy sugar in bulk to make brown sugar.
Brown sugar is basically this: sugar and molasses.
The difference between light brown sugar and dark brown sugar is this:
dark brown sugar has more molasses than light brown sugar.
I buy molasses during the holidays for a couple of recipes. But after I’m done with those recipes, the molasses usually gets pushed to the back- out of the way to be forgotten (same thing happens with corn syrup).
So when I thought I ran out of brown sugar, I really wasn’t out.
I needed to figure out how to make brown sugar and keep baking away.
It’s this simple: put measured amounts in a food processor and pulse until combined.
I had everything I needed to make brown sugar and I just didn’t know it!
One cup of white sugar and one tablespoon of molasses yields your basic ‘light’ brown sugar. More molasses (a tablespoon more or so) yields ‘dark’ brown sugar.
And that, my friend, is how you make brown sugar.
So I make several cups of light brown sugar at a time and store in a large container with a lid.
I don’t know how long it will keep because I have never made enough that ‘went bad. ‘
Brown sugar is simple and easy to make.
If you find yourself needing brown sugar I have armed you with how to make it. I hope you will make some of your own!
As the colder weather approaches, I am looking forward to the leaves changing color, and eventually getting to make leaf piles to play in.
I look forward to all the holiday baking and cooking with my children, too. These are moments I cherish as a mom and hope my children look back and love the memories, too!
